With over a million plus downloads on the Google Play store, Harry Potter Wizards Unite is off to a great start. It is not without it’s share of problems though. The numerous 1 star reviews in the Play Store indicate problems with logging in, buggy interfaces, and lack of appeal for rural players.
For the players that can play the game, they’re plagued with energy issues. Energy is the currency that is required to play the game.
The Biggest Problem? Energy Shortage.
You start with 75, and every spell you cast to recover “foundables” in the world costs one energy. You can refill your energy at inns, which can give you anywhere from two to ten at a time (it’s usually two), but something is off about the entire system. This energy does not recharge on its own over time, unlike every other game you’ve ever played with an energy meter.
The game also demands you try and catch every foundable you come across, because even if something is a low level duplicate, you will still get +1 credit toward the location that item or person or creature is from. This ensures you might spend 4-5 energy on some random foundable you already have, because you feel like you need to make some small amount of progress. If you plan on battling you’ll need energy as well. Spells require the use of energy and at a rate of 5 to 10 spells a battle, you can expect your energy depleting quickly.
All of this seems to support the “Freemium” model. If you need more energy, for a dollar you can recover 50 energy. The only free way to recover is at the Inns and at 2-10 energy every 5 minutes, you’ll be there for a while.
